With a large family and so many amazing friends who have become family, I am no stranger to hosting big events. Every Thanksgiving we host over 20 people. Christmas is the same! My kid’s birthdays, easily 50+ people get invited. People think I’m nuts, and they’re probably right but I love it. I love having my home filled with everyone we care about and making sure they feel cared for.
There’s something truly magical about opening your home to others. It’s a little act of love wrapped in candlelight and sometimes a little bit of chaos. I believe that great hosting isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating a cozy, welcoming space where people feel seen, comfortable, and cared for.
Whether you’re planning a dinner party, a weekend brunch, or a casual game night, these 10 tips will help you channel your inner hostess with the mostest. Plus, I’ve included some Amazon finds and cookbooks that make the process feel less like a production and more like an experience.
I would love to hear what your hosting tips or must haves are too! Leave a comment below to share.
1. Welcome Begins at the Door
Start with a warm entrance: a flickering lantern, a seasonal wreath, or a cheerful doormat sets the tone before your guests even step inside. One of my seasonal favorites is a simmer pot. They fill your home, and sometimes even out to your driveway, with amazing scents and seasonal flavors, are completely non-toxic and last for days.
Amazon Pick: “Welcome” Doormat – Timeless yet charming.
2. Offer a Signature Sip
Even a simple mocktail with fresh herbs feels intentional. Guests will love having something handed to them right away. They are thoughtful and can easily be tailored to themes as well.
Amazon Pick: Glass Drink Dispenser with Stand – beautiful and endlessly reusable.
3. Cook with Comfort in Mind
Stick to recipes you know work, and keep one or two favorite cookbooks on hand to inspire seasonal menus. Everyone loves your tried and true’s for a reason!
My Must-Have Cookbooks:
Half Baked Harvest Every Day – cozy meets craveable
The Comfortable Kitchen – fresh, easy meals that still impress
Measure with Your Heart – one of my favorite Tik Tok creators
4. Create Atmosphere in Layers
Lighting, scent, and sound all play a role in the vibe. Use soft lamps, flickering candles, and a curated playlist.
Amazon Pick: Flameless LED Candle Set – cozy glow, no mess.
5. Pre-Dinner Nibbles = Lifesaver
Avoid hangry guests by putting out a simple snack station that consists of olives, nuts, or a cheese board.
Amazon Pick: Acacia Wood Serving Tray – rustic, sturdy, and reusable.
6. Include a Fresh (or Faux) Floral Moment
One small arrangement on the table or bathroom counter brings everything to life.
Amazon Pick: Realistic Faux Eucalyptus – long-lasting and transitional through seasons.
7. Make the Bathroom Guest-Ready
Speaking of bathrooms; fresh towels, extra TP, and a pretty candle go a long way in making guests feel considered. I also like to have spray on hand for just in case!
Amazon Pick: Bathroom Storage Basket Set – keeps everything organized and pretty.
8. Choose Everyday-Pretty Serveware
Ditch the “special occasion only” mindset. Use what you love, and what can go in the dishwasher. Don’t feel the need to buy a new set every time though. Try thrifting staple hosting sets that are neutral. This will save you money and time when trying to figure out what plates and serving dishes to use.
Amazon Pick: White Ceramic Serving Platters – timeless and durable.
9. Keep a Conversation Game Handy
This is my favorite hack for smoothing awkward pauses or transitioning into post-dinner fun. That and my incredible wit and humor!
Amazon Pick: We’re Not Really Strangers Game – meaningful, heartwarming, and great for small groups.
10. Be Present, Not Perfect
This is the heart of hospitality and my #1 hosting rule. Don’t sweat the dishes or the dust bunny in the corner, your energy is what people will remember most.
Final Touch:
Hosting isn’t about showing off. It’s about gathering your people and saying, “You belong here.” With a few timeless tools and a whole lot of heart, you’ll build a home that’s always ready to welcome.
