Every weekend starts the same in my house. On Friday night after we’ve put the kids down, had some quiet time together on our front porch, my husband and I go through our calendar, budget and any lists we’ve created or added to during the week. We like to call these “check-in dates” because we’ll usually have a glass of wine, or two! These check-in dates set up not only our weekend for success but help us reset our home to have a fresh Monday (almost) every week. Not to mention they also keep us connected!
During our calendar check-in we go through our Skylight calendar app, which if you don’t have a digital planner, they are so worth it! This is coming from someone who would spend a hundred dollars on a paper planner every year just to fall off the wagon and stop using it before June. Anyway, in the calendar portion of our check-in, we go through any scheduled events we have for the weekend and major things for the rest of the month. When you have two kids, there’s always birthday parties, play dates, someone is visiting, etc. this keeps us both in the loop with plans so we’re not constantly asking each other what’s going on.
Next is money. My husband and I have always been super transparent with money and this portion of the check-in keeps us accountable with spending, shopping and any bill changes. We keep each other on track and informed.
Last is expectations. This part of our check-in is where we talk about what we want to accomplish for that weekend. If one of us wants to prioritize relaxing or catch up on a bigger house task, this is where it comes up. Groceries, laundry, a general house clean up (vacuum, wipe down counters, bathrooms and trash), and getting outside and moving are always part of our expectations. Our recent favorite has been to set up the kids pool in the front yard and letting them splash around together.
I hope this helps you with your weekend reset goals! Whether it’s just you or you have a partner and kids. It’s super realistic and not a million steps.
